Product recommendations

Product recommendations shows other products below the product a customer is viewing, in a scrolling row or a grid: similar pieces (“You may also like”) or items that go with it (“Complete the look”). It is available only on product pages, because the suggestions are worked out from the product on the page.

Choose related or complementary products

Recommendation type decides which products appear. Both come from Shopify, not from the theme:

• Related products are picked automatically by Shopify from what customers buy together and from product information such as descriptions and collections. They work without any setup, and you can override them for a product in the free Shopify Search & Discovery app.
• Complementary products appear only for products where you choose them yourself in the Search & Discovery app. Use them for outfits: a belt with trousers, a scarf with a coat.

When Shopify has nothing to suggest for a product, the section doesn’t appear on that product’s page. With complementary products this is common until you have set them up for most of your catalog.

Change the Heading to match the type, for example “Complete the look” for complementary products. If you leave it empty, screen readers still hear a suitable name.

Avoid showing the same products twice

The Product information section has its own Complementary products block, which shows the same products next to the buy buttons. If you use that block, set this section to Related products, so the two don’t repeat each other.

Why it looks different in the theme editor

Recommendations are loaded after the rest of the page, when the customer scrolls near them. In the theme editor you may see a notice instead of products, explaining when they appear for the chosen type. Preview a product that has recommendations, or open the page in your store, to see the real result. If the browser has JavaScript turned off, the section isn’t shown.

Pick a row or a grid

Layout, Products per row on desktop, Use full page width and the Product card settings work as in the Featured collection section. Maximum products to show is an upper limit: Shopify may return fewer products. The rest of the card, such as color swatches, quick add and badges, is set for the whole store in Theme settings > Product cards.

Show it only between two dates

Turn on Schedule visibility and set a start, an end, or both. See Scheduling.
