Blog post

Blog post is the page of a single post: its title, date and author, the featured image, the text, the tags and a Share button, followed by links to the previous and next post and, if your blog allows them, the comments. It is used on the blog post template, where a Blog posts strip below it suggests what to read next.

You write the title, text, featured image, author, tags and excerpt in Content > Blog posts in your Shopify admin. In the theme editor you only choose what to show and in which order. Write the image’s alternative text on the image itself, in the post editor.

The text keeps the formatting of the editor. Wide tables scroll sideways on phones, and customers using a keyboard can reach them with the Tab key.

The post is built from blocks: Title, Featured image, Content, Tags and Share, plus blocks from apps. Drag them into the order you want, or remove the ones you don’t need.

  • Use only one Title block. If you remove it, the title is still there for screen readers and search engines, but customers won’t see it.
  • Title can show breadcrumbs (Home / your blog), the date and the author. The author appears only when the post has one. Show date updated adds the date the post was last saved, when that is more than a day after it was published. Shopify updates that date every time you save the post, even for a small fix, so it is off by default.
  • Featured image can match the width of the text or run to the edges of the page with Full width. A post without a featured image simply skips the block.
  • Tags lists the post’s tags as links to the matching topic pages of the blog. A post without tags shows nothing.
  • Share is a button that copies the address of the post, so customers can paste it wherever they like. It doesn’t load social network buttons or tracking. The label is “Share” in your store’s language unless you write your own in Button label. The button needs JavaScript; without it, customers can still copy the address from the browser.

Show previous and next posts adds two links under the post, in date order: “Previous post” to the older one on the left, “Next post” to the newer one on the right. On the oldest or newest post only one link appears. In right-to-left languages the sides swap.

Comments are turned on or off for each blog, not in the theme. Go to Content > Blog posts > Manage blogs, open the blog and choose whether comments are disabled, allowed after you approve them, or allowed straight away.

  • When comments are allowed, the post shows them five per page, with a form to write one. Each comment needs a name, an email address and a message.
  • If you approve comments first, the form says so, and after sending, customers are told the comment will appear once it’s approved. You approve them in your Shopify admin.
  • Shopify adds a spam check (hCaptcha) to the comment form. It comes from Shopify, not from the theme, and customers may occasionally be asked to complete a challenge.
