404 page

The 404 page is what customers see when they open an address that doesn’t exist in your store: a mistyped link, a product you deleted, an old URL from a newsletter. It tells them the page wasn’t found and gives them three ways to carry on: search, continue shopping, or go back to the home page. It is used only on the 404 page template.

The title, the explanation and the link labels (“Page not found”, “Continue shopping”, “Back to home”) aren’t settings: they come with the theme and are translated into every language your store uses. To reword them, edit the theme’s default content in Online Store > Themes > Edit default theme content in your Shopify admin.

Help customers find what they were looking for

Section titled “Help customers find what they were looking for”

Show search adds a search field below the explanation. It opens your store’s search results page, like the search in the header. Leave it on unless your catalog is very small: a customer who followed an old product link usually knows what they want.

Continue shopping always leads to the page with all your products, and Back to home to your home page.

The section is only the message. On the 404 page template, new arrivals and recently viewed products already sit below it, in the Featured collection and Recently viewed sections. You can change, reorder or remove them, and add other sections, like on any other template.

When you change the handle of a product, collection or page, or delete one, links to the old address end up here. Add a URL redirect in your Shopify admin to send them to the new page instead.
