Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the questions merchants ask most often about Dossier. Each one links to the page with the details.

When a new version is out, your Shopify admin shows it in Online Store > Themes. Add the update to your theme library, check it in preview, then publish it: your settings and content come with it. Updates that change settings in a way that needs your attention are never applied on their own, and a theme whose code files were edited doesn’t receive updates automatically. The release notes of each version list what changed.

Yes. Apps that add blocks can place them in the Product information, Featured product, Cart, Cart drawer and Blog post sections: select the section in the theme editor and look for the app under Add block. Apps that work on the whole store, such as chat or analytics, are turned on under App embeds in the theme editor.

The texts of the store, such as buttons, cart and account messages, come translated in English and 31 more languages, the same languages as Shopify checkout. The theme editor follows the language of your Shopify admin. Right-to-left languages, such as Arabic and Hebrew, mirror the layout automatically. To translate your own content, use the Translate and Adapt app or another translation app.

Where do I write the alternative text of an image?

Section titled “Where do I write the alternative text of an image?”

In your Shopify admin, open Content > Files, select the image and fill in its alternative text. Dossier uses that text everywhere the image appears, so you write it once. Product images take their alternative text from the media of the product.

Section titled “How do I add filters to collections and search?”

Filters come from the Shopify Search & Discovery app: install it, add filters such as size, color and price, and they appear in the Product grid and in Search results.

You can, from Online Store > Themes > Edit code, but the edited theme no longer receives updates automatically, and support doesn’t cover custom code or problems it causes. Duplicate the theme first and work on the copy. For small additions, use the Custom Liquid section, which keeps the theme files untouched.

Can someone customize Dossier for my store?

Section titled “Can someone customize Dossier for my store?”

Yes. ICT Sviluppo, the team that develops Dossier, makes custom sections, design changes and app integrations, and carries your customizations over to new versions of the theme. See Customization services. Theme support stays free and separate.

Does my store work for customers without JavaScript?

Section titled “Does my store work for customers without JavaScript?”

Yes. Navigation, menus, product options, add to cart, cart and search work without JavaScript; JavaScript adds conveniences on top, such as the cart drawer and predictive search.

How do I show a section only during a sale?

Section titled “How do I show a section only during a sale?”

Use Scheduling: set a start and an end date on the section or on a promotional block, and it appears and disappears on its own.
