Search results

Search results is the search page of your store: a search field with the customer’s words, then the products, blog posts and pages that match, with filters, sorting and pagination as on a collection. It is used on the search template, which customers reach from the search in the header or at /search.

The page changes with what the customer did:

  • Nothing searched yet: a “Search the store” heading, a short prompt and your suggested links.
  • No results: the heading repeats the words searched, with a few tips, your suggested links and a link to all products.
  • Results: products, blog posts and pages in a single grid, in the order Shopify ranks them. Blog posts and pages say what they are on their card, so customers can tell them from products.

When the chosen filters match nothing, customers see a message and a link to remove all filters.

Under No results, choose a menu in Suggested links. Its top-level items appear as shortcuts on the empty search page and when a search finds nothing, so customers always have somewhere to go. The main menu is used by default; create a dedicated menu, for example with your main collections, in Online Store > Navigation.

Filters come from the Search & Discovery app in your Shopify admin, as on collection pages: choose there which filters exist and in what order, then turn on Enable filtering. Filters apply to products only, so when a customer applies one, blog posts and pages leave the results. When a search finds only blog posts or pages, no filters appear.

Filter position on desktop, Filter values before showing search and Enable sorting work as in the Product grid of collection pages. On phones, filters always open in a drawer.

Shopify decides which products match a search and how they’re ranked. To change that, use the Search & Discovery app, for example to add synonyms or boost products.

Choose how many results and how customers see more

Section titled “Choose how many results and how customers see more”

Results per page sets how many results load at once. Under Pagination, Type chooses between Numbered pages, a Load more button and Infinite scroll. Infinite scroll switches to the button after three pages, so customers can still reach the footer, and every page also has a real link for customers without JavaScript.

Results per row on desktop and Results per row on mobile set the grid. Under Product card, Image ratio crops product photos to the same shape and Show vendor adds the brand above the name. Everything else on product cards, such as swatches, badges and quick add, is set in Theme settings > Product cards, the same as on collection pages.
