Cart drawer

The Cart drawer is the cart that slides in from the side of the screen when customers add a product or select the cart in the Header. Customers change quantities, remove products and check out without leaving the page they’re on. It lives in the Sidebars group of the theme editor and works on every page except the cart page.

The drawer is on as long as the section is in the Sidebars group: there is no switch in theme settings. To send customers to the cart page instead, remove this section. The cart link in the header then opens the cart page, and the Cart notification section confirms each product added.

To see the drawer while you edit it, open any page other than the cart page in the theme editor and add a product to the cart.

  • At the top, the title with the number of items and the close button. Right after an add, a short confirmation names the product added.
  • In the middle, the products in the cart, followed by your blocks. This part scrolls. When a customer removes a product, an Undo link brings it back.
  • At the bottom, always in view, the totals and the View cart and Check out buttons.

The drawer opens from the right, or from the left in right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Hebrew. Customers close it with the close button, the Esc key or a click outside.

The blocks between the products and the totals are yours to add, remove and reorder. By default the drawer has Delivery estimate, Product suggestions, Cart note and Discount code. You can also add Free shipping progress, Terms and conditions, Invoice request, Text and blocks from your apps.

Each block type can be used once, except Text and app blocks. A second copy of the same type shows nothing in your store, and a notice marks it in the theme editor.

These blocks have their own settings, separate from the blocks of the Cart page: you can, for example, suggest fewer products in the drawer than on the page.

  • Cart note and Discount code start closed, to save room, and open by themselves when a customer has already written a note or applied a code.
  • Delivery estimate uses the rules in Theme settings > Delivery estimate, where you also turn it on. It is hidden when nothing in the cart needs shipping.
  • Product suggestions shows products that complement the cart, which you set up in the Shopify Search & Discovery app, or products from a collection. Products already in the cart are left out.

Add the Free shipping progress block and enter your free shipping amount in Free shipping minimum order. The theme doesn’t read your shipping rates, so use the same amount as your free shipping rate in Settings > Shipping and delivery. Without an amount the bar doesn’t appear.

If you sell in several currencies, Show only in your store currency hides the bar for customers who shop in another one. To use a different amount for each market, adapt the setting in the Translate & Adapt app, then turn this option off.

The Terms and conditions block adds a checkbox that customers must check before checking out, with a link to your terms of service. Write the policy first in Settings > Policies: without it, the block doesn’t appear.

The Invoice request block lets customers ask for an invoice and enter the details needed in Italy, for individuals, companies or nonprofit organizations, with optional e-invoicing fields. The details are saved with the order.

Show accelerated checkout buttons in the Checkout button block adds buttons such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay or PayPal, depending on the payment methods you’ve turned on. They are off by default because they load payment scripts on every page, which can slow down your store.

The buttons stay hidden until customers accept the terms, when you use Terms and conditions, and while an invoice is requested, because they skip the cart and its details.

The Totals and Checkout button blocks always sit at the bottom of the drawer. You can change their settings, but you can’t move or delete them, so the drawer always has a total and a way to check out.

When the cart is empty, the drawer says so and offers a Continue shopping button. Choose an Empty cart collection to also show up to three available products from it, as a place to start.

Show vendor adds the brand name to each product in the cart. Color scheme colors the whole drawer.
