# Password page

Source: <https://docs.ictsviluppo.example/dossier/sections/main-password/>

The password page is what visitors see while your store is password protected: before you open, during a launch, or while you restock. It shows your logo, a heading, your message to visitors, an email signup so people can hear when you open, and a field for those who have the password. It is used only on the password page template.

## Turn the password page on or off

The page appears only when password protection is on. You turn it on and off, and choose the password, in **Online Store > Preferences > Password protection** in your Shopify admin. While a store is on a trial plan, Shopify keeps it protected until you pick a plan.

The page has no header and no footer: their links would only lead back to it.

## Write your password page

- **Heading** says why the store is closed, for example “Opening soon” or “Back on Monday”. If you leave it empty, the store name is used instead.
- The message under the heading is the one you write in **Online Store > Preferences**, in the password protection box, as the message for your visitors. If it’s empty, the page simply shows the heading.
- The logo is the one in [Theme settings](https://docs.ictsviluppo.example/dossier/theme-settings) > **Logo and favicon**; **Logo width** sets its size here only. Without a logo, the store name is shown in text.

## Collect emails before you open

With **Show email signup** on, visitors can leave their email address. They are added to your customers in your Shopify admin with email marketing consent and the tag `password page`, so you can find them later and send them an email when you open. The heading above the field is the second **Heading** setting; leave it empty to show the field on its own.

Shopify may add a spam check (hCaptcha) to the signup form. It is added by Shopify, not by the theme, and visitors may occasionally be asked to complete a challenge.

## How visitors enter with the password

The password field is folded under “Enter using password”, because most visitors don’t have one. With the right password Shopify takes the visitor to the page they originally asked for. With a wrong one the page reloads with the field open, an error message, and the cursor already in the field, so they can try again straight away. This also works when JavaScript is turned off.

At the bottom of the page, “Are you the store owner? Log in here” leads to your Shopify admin, next to the “Powered by Shopify” link.
